The only smell I always associate with painting is the combined smell of turpentine and cigars which reminds me of my grandfather and some other painters-friends studios.
I never gave much thought to the idea of smell in my work. I always thought my work was somehow silent, something made or seen when one is concentrated, focused and shut off from the other influences around. I much experience the visual the way one can experience odours. It is as something which lays hidden in your memory and suddenly when you stumble upon it in reality can reveal a long forgotten scene, room or situation.
