The NASEVO Prize

The NASEVO Prize is a call organised by the Fundación Ernesto Ventós in conjunction with other entities and institutions with the aim of promoting the creation and dissemination of new projects by artists that merge art, smell and innovation.

Premio NASEVO I

Premio NASEVO II

The artist Marta de los pájaros was awarded the 2nd NASEVO International Prize for her work Horizon and Smell: Geographical emergence of a silenced space and time.

This piece puts forward a reflective critique of the philosophical disengagement from smell in the Western tradition, proposing an experience that sets out to liberate it from its exclusive physiological responsibility; to overcome the anatomical-descriptive approach that has weakened it; to rehabilitate the nose and break down the prejudices surrounding it, and to restore it to the place from which it should never have been displaced.

The work explores the concept of Horizon (responsible for contouring the information our senses receive and configuring our perception of the world in coordinates of proximity or distance) to highlight the exclusive dual nature of smell and the spatio-temporal particularities of the horizon it draws. A horizon that weaves the distant with the near and generates unique experiences of continuity (exterior/interior) in which what is perceptible from a distance is rediscovered in the most intimate part of the being.

The work recreates the universal sense of smell of Gaia (ours), inviting us to enter and hear the matchless voice of this sense, agitator of the intellect and the emotions, through which we perceive nuances invisible to the eye and indescribable by the word.

Using the medium of collage, the work generates a necessary dialectical crossroads between conceptually correlated languages (plastic, textual and graphic) in order to grasp, for a few moments, the rich complexity that the olfactory code bequeaths us.

Premio NASEVO III

The artist Laia Noal was awarded the 3rd NASEVO International Prize for her work Paisatge Fragmented Landscape (I, II, III), 2021.

Fragmented Landscape (I, II, III) evokes the fractured perception of the landscape based on the smells, textures, sensations and elements encountered on Portbou beach in Alt Empordà.

Fragmentation is related to both perception and representation; we perceive and represent in a fragmented way, reconstructing what we think of as a place from the fragments we have perceived. This interaction with the world around us also determines the way in which we influence, modify and fragment the natural environment.

In relation to the landscape, the work is constructed from a multisensory perspective, understanding it as not only an image but also the accumulation of stimuli that we experience and feel in a place: from smells to sounds and tactile sensations. In this respect, Ella Noal seeks to make clear the importance of the global perception of the landscape through virtually all our senses rather than focusing exclusively on sight. What she is looking for is the point of contact between the exterior and the interior landscape, with the desire to provide plastic creation with the ability to show this invisible space that is generated between the way we perceive and the place in which we find ourselves.

Premio NASEVO IV

Yolanda Uriz won the NASEVO 2022 scholarship with her project Chemical Ecosystem.

The work is configured by means of a self-regulating mechanism with sensors that measure the state of the air and, based on the resulting readings, emits certain smells and sounds. In other words, what we have here is an interactive work of art, which engages reciprocally with the ecosystem and the environment that surrounds it at all times: CO2 levels, the people in the room…

This piece was made thanks to the collaboration of LUCTA and Ventós SA.

The Fundación Ernesto Ventós / International Nasevo Prize, together with ISEA2022 Barcelona in collaboration with the NewArtFundation and HacTe, presented this call for the scholarship for the production and research of artistic pieces in the field of confluence between art, science and technology.
