Smell is the sense that connects us in a deeper way to memory and the emotions related to it. It is the sense that reminds me of my childhood and especially of my grandparents. And if I think about my grandparents, the memories vary from the smell of their house, the fresh coffee, the drawers of the clothes, my grandfather’s hands that taste like cigars and liquorice, my grandmother’s garden with all its flowers. And it is from here that the Garden diptych was born. If we close our eyes and try to evoke a memory, we can visualize, even if not clearly, sequences of images. On the other hand, when we want to relive a smell, even though the memory is very strong, it is impossible for us to enjoy it. With this work I want to create a permanent visual memory, based on an olfactory memory. Garden arises from the superimposition of several photos of the flowers of my grandmother’s garden. They are distorted, blurred, confused images, in the same way that memories are presented to the mind. And so all the various layers are mixed in the work as in the creation of a fragrance, and they reach the public in an abstract way, so that anyone can find their own experiences, relive their own memories in it.
