A photograph has only two dimensions and yet it has to represent the whole of reality. It does not smell, but it has to make us relive smells, as well as such intangible things as feelings and sensations, and affect our moods.
For all of which the mechanism is straightforward, but not simple: the memory. A photograph has to reach the part of the brain that stores memory and stir it up so that the viewer experiences the sensations again. A branch shaken by the wind will take us to a personal moment and we will once again ‘smell’ the wet broom flowers in the rain.
The magic of Photography.
